Greek Island Ferries Explained: Blue Star vs. SeaJets, Piraeus Port Gates & Meltemi Winds

Conventional Blue Star car ferries vs. high-speed SeaJets catamarans, navigating Piraeus Gates E1–E10 vs. Rafina Port, luggage storage on board, and avoiding Meltemi wind seasickness.

1. Conventional Ferries (Blue Star / Fast Ferries) vs. High-Speed Catamarans (SeaJets / Hellenic Seaways)

When booking ferries across the Aegean—or comparing routes in our Greek Island Ferry & Cyclades Hopper Calculator—you will choose between two fundamentally different vessel types:

Piraeus → Paros / Naxos Fare€43 – €50 (Economy / Air Seat)€68 – €85 (Silver / Club Seat)
Piraeus → Santorini Fare€58 – €68 (7h 15m – 7h 45m)€85 – €98 (4h 45m – 5h 15m)

Stability in Meltemi WindsExcellent — massive hull handles Beaufort 6–7 swells smoothlyProne to rolling & occasional delays in Beaufort 7–8+ winds

2. Navigating Athens' Three Ferry Ports: Piraeus, Rafina & Lavrio

  • Piraeus Port (Πειραιάς): Greece's main ferry hub, 20–25 minutes from Monastiraki/Syntagma on Athens Metro Line 1 (Green) or Line 3 (Blue) for €1.20. Piraeus is huge—check your gate before walking! Gates E6 & E7 (right outside the Metro bridge) serve Paros, Naxos, Ios, and Santorini; Gate E8 serves Saronic hydrofoils (Hydra, Spetses, Aegina); Gates E9 & E10 serve Mykonos, Syros, Tinos, and Ikaria; Gates E2 & E3 serve Crete (Heraklion & Chania). Free inside-port shuttle buses connect Gate E5/Metro with distant gates.
  • Rafina Port (Ραφήνα): Located on Attica's east coast just 30 minutes by KTEL bus (€4) or taxi (€35–€40) from Athens Airport (ATH). Ideal if you land at ATH and want to sail directly to Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, or Naxos on Fast Ferries or Golden Star Ferries without entering central Athens.
  • Lavrio Port (Λαύριο): Southern Attica port serving Kea (Tzia) and Kythnos in 1 hour.

3. Boarding, Luggage Racks & E-Tickets

All Greek ferry operators now issue mobile QR boarding passes (complete online check-in 2–48 hours before departure). When you walk up the stern vehicle ramp, place large suitcases on the labeled metal racks inside the car garage by your destination island's name, and carry a small daypack with valuables upstairs to your seat.
