Clinging to a natural amphitheater 570 meters up the southwestern cliffs of Mount Parnassus—beneath the twin gleaming limestone crags of the Phaedriades and looking down across a silver sea of 1.2 million ancient olive trees to the Corinthian Gulf—UNESCO-listed Delphi (Δελφοί) was revered by the ancient Greeks as the literal Omphalos (Navel or Center) of the Earth.
For over a thousand years, kings, generals, and ordinary citizens climbed the zig-zagging Sacred Way past city-state treasuries to consult the Pythia (Oracle of Apollo) before founding colonies or waging war, and gathered every four years for the panhellenic Pythian Games.

Local tips & mistakes to avoid
The Sanctuary of Apollo is built on a steep mountain slope climbing nearly 200 vertical meters from the entrance to the ancient stadium—wear sturdy walking shoes, bring water, and start at 08:00 AM. The Tholos of Athena Pronaia (the round temple featured on most postcards of Delphi) is located at a separate sanctuary 10 minutes' walk downhill toward Arachova and is completely free to enter. Delphi makes an effortless 2-to-3-day mainland loop when paired with Meteora (3.5 hours north via Lamia and Trikala).
