Athens (Attica)
Athens (Αθήνα) is far more than a quick overnight stop before catching a morning ferry from Piraeus. Over the past decade, Europe's oldest capital has evolved into one of the Mediterranean's most rewarding year-round city breaks—where 2,500-year-old Pentelic marble temples look down over specialty coffee roasters, rooftop bars, contemporary art spaces, and shaded neighborhood squares fragrant with bitter orange trees.
At the heart of the city rises the flat-topped limestone citadel of the Acropolis, crowned by the Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its Porch of the Caryatids, the Propylaea monumental gateway, and the jewel-like Temple of Athena Nike. A grand car-free cobblestone promenade—Dionysiou Areopagitou and Apostolou Pavlou—loops completely around the base of the Sacred Rock, connecting the glass-floored Acropolis Museum, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Filopappou Hill, the Ancient Agora, and the lively flea markets of Monastiraki without a single lane of traffic.
