Nafplio & the Peloponnese

Nafplio & the Peloponnese (Peloponnese)

Connected to mainland Attica by the narrow Isthmus of Corinth, the Peloponnese (Πελοπόννησος) contains the highest concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites and medieval fortresses anywhere in Greece—yet receives a fraction of the international crowds of the Cyclades. Its undisputed crown jewel is Nafplio (Ναύπλιο), Modern Greece's first capital (1828–1834), set on a sunlit peninsula in the Argolic Gulf beneath two Venetian castles and facing the fairytale Bourtzi island fortress.

Within a 35-minute drive of Nafplio's marble-paved Syntagma Square lie the acoustic marvel of the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, Agamemnon's cyclopean Lion Gate at Mycenae, the bronze-age ramparts of Tiryns, and the velvety Agiorgitiko vineyards of Nemea—while further south await the stone towers of the Mani, Byzantine Mystras, and the sea-girt rock of Monemvasia.
