Greek Pronunciation Rules Every Traveler Should Know

  • Follow the Written Accent Mark (Τόνος): Every multi-syllable Greek word has a single acute accent mark over the stressed vowel (e.g., Καλημέρα → ka-lee-MEH-ra, Ευχαριστώ → ef-ha-ree-STO). Stressing the accented syllable makes you immediately understood.
  • Key Vowel & Consonant Pairs: Notice that Η / Ι / Υ / ΕΙ / ΟΙ all sound like "ee" (as in feet), ΑΙ sounds like "eh" (as in bed), ΟΥ sounds like "oo" (as in moon), ΜΠ at the start of a word sounds like "B" (Μπύρα = Bee-ra, beer), and ΝΤ sounds like "D" (Ντομάτα = Do-ma-ta).
