Best Time to Visit Greece: Shoulder Season (May–June & Sept–Oct), Meltemi Winds & Orthodox Easter

Month-by-month weather, sea temperatures, when ferry schedules ramp up, understanding the July–August Aegean Meltemi wind, and celebrating Greek Orthodox Easter (Pascha).

1. The Sweet Spots: Late May–June & September–Mid-October

For 90% of travelers, the two golden windows for Greece are May 15 to June 30 and September 1 to October 20:

  • Late May & June: Wildflowers still carpet mainland archaeological sites, daylight lasts until 21:00, all island ferries and beach tavernas are operating at 100%, hotel rates are 25–40% below August peaks, and temperatures hover around a glorious 26–30°C.
  • September & Early October: The Aegean and Ionian Seas retain peak summer warmth (24–26°C—significantly warmer than in May!), the summer Meltemi wind subsides, grape harvests begin across Nemea, Santorini, and Crete, and crowds thin dramatically.

2. Understanding the Summer Meltemi Wind (July & August)

From mid-July through August, a dry northern pressure system known since antiquity as the Meltemi (Etesian wind) blows across the Aegean Sea. It keeps Cycladic humidity low and skies crystal clear, but when it reaches Force 6–7 Beaufort, northern-facing beaches on Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros get wavy. Simply head to south-facing beaches (Ornos, Platis Gialos, Agia Anna, Faragas), which remain calm as a swimming pool.
